Harmen Meyndertsz van den Bogaert was one of Manhattan's first surgeon, in addition he was also a barber. In his younger years, he became well respected in his community. In 1634, Bogaert traversed into the Iroquois country in order to setttle a fur dispute between the Mohawk tribe and the Dutch.
